Costa Rica - April 2011 Home » Forums » Birding » Trip Reports

Have been rather busy adding photos and features to the site.
Visited Costa Rica in April. Goal was to visit the Caribbean lowlands and the north west. Stopped one night at Volcano Poas Lodge, where the Slaty Flowerpiercer eluded me again. Only picked up a clean shot of the Ruddy-capped Nightingale Thrush and some regulars.
Tirimbina is a popular protected area in the eastern lowlands, and downhill from the Volcano Lodge. I negotiated a good weekly rate, and spent many days walking the trails. The highlight was certainly the Agami Heron, as well as the Long-billed Starthroat. Great Internet connection, food, rooms.
On the way out I stopped at a private lodge, Auberge de Socorro, a little higher on the east site. Two days of walking the trails turned up a Scaled Antpitta and White-throated Spadebill among others. Excellent food and accomodations again.
Had planned to visit Heliconias Lodge and Rainforest at Bijagua de Upala, and was very happy with the pre-visit support, but in the last minute I switched to Rancho Margot, a little closer near Arenal, where I spent my final week. Many interesting species there including the Scaly-breasted Hummingbird, Shining Honeycreeper, Nicaraguan Seedeater and Laughing Falcon. The Yellow-eared Toucanet eluded me. Another great place to stay, with the best organic food in Costa Rica.
Maybe one day I will elaborate on all of this.
