Letter to Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Florida Home » Blogs » tomfriedel's blog

I visited Mills Pond park and saw that they were destroying some of the very little dense forest remaining in Broward County This forest was or used to be behind a sign saying that land was purchased for conservation by the Park Bond referendum.

Millions of songbirds migrate through Florida every year and need this type of habitat. Global warming threatens to flood our state, and turning forest into open fields routinely cut by lawnmowers is the opposite of what we should be doing.

I see many 'Greening Gateway' signs, and planting a few trees is great, but why not save the tax payers some money and stop mowing and cutting these areas, and let Florida's natural plants grow. The are many ecological and economic benefits to doing this.
