Open letter to Fort Lauderdale city commissioner. Home » Blogs » tomfriedel's blog

Hi

I live by the Bonnet house and they told me they had to cut a path of two meters of trees because the city has a ordinance about the trees poking through the fence. Is there a good reason for this?

As you may know each spring and fall millions of song birds, some endangered, migrate through Florida, and some perhaps unwisely head up the east coast. This sort of natural habitat is critical
for their trip, and not common at all in many places.

As you may know, carbon levels in the atmosphere are ever increasing, and people are talking about this years extreme weather events as the 'new normal', but in reality climate change is just getting started, and we will soon wish for years like this.

There are so many cut lawns in cities, for example around roads. We spend tax dollars to hire people and maintain equipment, so that they can burn gasoline to destroy what could be natural areas. These natural areas would help with carbon storage, water retention, as well as provide wildlife habitat, such as for the migtrating songbirds. Why not create more natural mini-areas, and relax any ordinances that require killing nature for what I suppose for some is aesthetic reasons, but to me looks just very sad.

Thank you,
Tom Friedel
