Africa is tearing apart!
This massive and beautiful continent is slowly but progressively convulsing and splitting. The action is happening along the Great Rift Valley where the consequence of elemental forces can be seen, heard and smelled at first hand. As the African plate splits the intense forces of friction between the adjacent tectonic plates creates intense heat which then superheats the ground water producing a mix of pressurised super-heated water and steam which then erupts through cracks in the ground producing impressive whooshing sulphurous geysers.
A consequence of this intense geological activity is that a number of lakes have formed along the length of the Rift Valley. Some of these are massive -almost inland freshwater seas which give rise to great rivers whilst others are smaller without an appreciable outflow. Lakes without significant drainage are subject to the concentrating effects of evaporation which creates brackish alkaline bodies of water too caustic to support most aquatic life. Such shallow, warm, soda-rich lakes basking under intense sunlight favours the growth of massive blooms of blue-green algae. Lesser Flamingo have evolved to harvest this rich bonanza and in the absence of competition they can on some lakes be found in huge numbers. Often Lake Bogoria holds over 1,000,000 Lesser Flamingo. This image shows one of the many geysers on the lakeside with part of this massive flamingo flock as a backdrop.
