One of the NZ honeyeaters (family Meliphagidae), and yet another NZ species under threat from introduced predators and habitat loss. This species is also surviving on islands, but has been reintroduced to a few predator-free sites on the mainland.

You can read more on the Stitchbird at the Tiritiri Matangi Island website here: www.tiritirimatangi.org.nz/Fauna/Stitchbird.htm
EDITOR: IOU classifies in a different family. The nominate subspecies is extinct.
